As an anti-racist, decolonial media instructor and creator I often find myself thinking about the role media and film education has in deconstructing colonial narratives.
My goal is to work with my students to “make strange,” as Leilani Sabzalian says, colonial ways of knowing, creating, and being.
-
Students can work with G to write scripts, build cinematography and editing skills, engage with film history, and research and film documentaries all while applying Indigenous and anti-racist praxis to their process. Students will leave each lesson with a new skill and confidence in their abilities and knowledge base.
-
Students will build a practice of ethical relationality and reciprocity (Jo-Ann Archibald (2008)). This will allow them to see how interconnected they are to the issue they wish to discuss in their work. This will also ground them in their efforts and their relationships to the people who will guide and aid them through their work.
Based on their particular interests, students will also be asked to participate in assignments, readings, and discussions about documentary film history, the current state of the film industry, and what our place is in the future of documentary filmmaking all while producing their own projects.
Students will learn the etiquette behind the interview process, how to stage an interview, and how to work with participants. Students will also analyze their role in their films, think critically about the effect media has on its audience, and what their responsibility is to the people featured in their project.
-
Students will expand upon the knowledge they come into lessons with and engage with that knowledge by confronting and/or affirming it. While partaking in decolonial media work, students must grow and nurture their ideas of “valid knowledge and story” and recreate what that means to them and the world at large. If necessary, students may work with community organizations, individuals, and beyond for their projects.
